Training Description
This play therapy training is offered On-Demand as a go-at-your-own pace course for non-contact hours.
This training provides a comprehensive and practical approach to play therapy supervision, focusing on how to guide supervisees from experience to clinical application. Participants will learn a structured supervision process that supports clinical decision-making, supervisee development, and understanding of the broader systems impacting clients.
The workshop integrates experiential supervision activities designed to build strong supervisory relationships and increase self-awareness, along with a clear framework for translating those experiences into play therapy interventions. Participants will learn how to create play-based prompts, ask meaningful clinical questions, and adapt activities for use with children in the playroom, including exploring the client’s perspective.
A developmental lens will be introduced to support decision-making around level of directiveness and the child’s capacity for insight and expression. Participants will also explore how relational, cultural, and systemic factors influence both supervision and play therapy practice.
In addition to the supervision model and process, participants will receive practical tools including ethical documentation, supervision forms, and evaluation resources to support supervisee development across all phases of training.
*Pre-requisites: This training is open to all clinicians, including those with no prior EMDR training. The theory and skills taught in this course are applicable for all clinicians. Since Rhonda is an EMDR Approved Consultant and trainer in EMDR therapy, there will be discussion of how to integrate the information into the EMDR Therapy Standard Protocol. Only participants who have completed EMDRA-Approved Basic EMDR Training will receive EMDRIA credit.
Learning Objectives
1. Describe the ARC Integrative Supervision Model and its application to ongoing supervision decision-making (assessment, response, and context)
2. Apply a structured supervision process to translate experiential activities into clinical application, case conceptualization, and systemic understanding
3. Demonstrate the use of Core Foundational Activities to build the supervisory relationship, increase self-awareness, and support supervisee development
4. Integrate the Play Therapy Dimensions Model (PTDM) into supervision to guide clinical decision-making related to directiveness and consciousness
5. Adapt supervision activities for use in the playroom, including generating play-based prompts, clinical questions, and client-centered interventions
6. Analyze the impact of relational, cultural, and systemic factors on supervision and play therapy practice
7. Utilize supervision documentation and evaluation tools to support ethical practice, supervisee development, and regulatory requirements

She is the founder and owner of the Center for Counseling and Family Relationships, a large, thriving group practice that was established in 2007 and specializes in family systems and trauma-informed approaches. Dr. Johnson is also the founder and owner of CCFAM Training, established in 2012, offering supervision and ethics courses. She is also the owner of Play Therapy Training Resources, established in 2021. Through those companies, she provides continuing education, supervision, and consultations. Dr. Johnson has been supervising for the state of Texas since 2007, both individually and in groups, as well as virtually and in-person. She has provided supervision for supervisees within her practice, for those outside of her practice, and for supervisees with multiple sites including community agencies, adoption agencies, hospitals, and churches.
