Training Description

This play therapy training uses Adlerian theory to conceptualize children’s behavior as purposeful and connected to each child’s need for belonging and significance. Through an Adlerian play therapy lens, participants will examine how caregiver interactions shape children’s beliefs about self, others, and relationships.

Participants will connect Positive Discipline’s four mistaken goals of behavior with play therapy-informed parent consultation. Clinicians will consider how encouragement, connection, accountability, and developmentally responsive support can address the child’s underlying relational needs.

Through case examples and experiential discussion, clinicians will apply Adlerian concepts, Positive Discipline strategies, and play therapy principles to support therapeutic play, strengthen caregiver-child relationships, foster responsibility, and promote healthy emotional development.

Learning Objectives

  1. Analyze the four mistaken goals of child behavior through an Adlerian play therapy lens.
  2. Differentiate discouraging and empowering caregiver responses that support belonging, connection, and play therapy treatment goals.
  3. Apply natural and logical consequences within play therapy-informed parent coaching.
