TRAINING DESCRIPTION

This play therapy training is offered Live In-Person for contact hours and Virtual via Zoom Platform for non-contact hours.

This introductory training provides play therapists with an experiential overview of sandtray therapy within a Child-Centered Play Therapy framework. Sandtray therapy supports the expression and processing of internal experiences through symbolic and expressive play, allowing older children and adolescents to use sand and miniatures to explore thoughts, feelings, relationships, identity, and lived experiences in developmentally responsive ways. This nonverbal, experiential process supports emotional regulation, self-expression, meaning-making, and emotional safety within the play therapy process.

Participants will explore foundational principles of sandtray therapy, including developmentally responsive environment setup, therapeutic presence, and child-centered facilitation of symbolic expression with older children and adolescents. Through experiential activities, guided reflection, and applied examples, participants will develop beginning skills for integrating trauma-informed, strengths-based sandtray interventions into play therapy practice.

Learning Objectives

1. Describe at least 3 foundational principles of sandtray therapy and their relationship to child-centered play therapy.

2. Demonstrate at least 2 strategies for creating a developmentally responsive sandtray environment that supports symbolic expression and emotional safety in play therapy.
