Training Description
This play therapy training is offered Live In-Person for contact hours and Virtual via Zoom Platform for non-contact hours.
This six-hour seminar series offers a comprehensive look at the roots of play therapy and the seminal theories that continue to shape the field today. Designed to be completed in one-hour segments over a two-month period, this flexible format allows clinicians to explore key historical developments and foundational theoretical models at a steady, manageable pace. Each session will focus on a different aspect of play therapy’s evolution, including major contributors, seminal theories, and historically significant approaches that have influenced how clinicians understand and practice therapeutic play with children. Ideal for both new and seasoned play therapists, this series provides the historical context and theoretical grounding essential for ethical and effective clinical work.
What are the trainings offered in this course?
This series will be presented in six one-hour training segments across a period of two months. Each training segment can be purchased as an individual training, however, we offer a discount for purchasing all six trainings as a bundle.
This training explores the roots of play therapy, focusing on how the field began and how it has grown over time.
In this hour, we discuss attachment theories as well as their relationship to Developmental Play Therapy, Filial Play Therapy, and Theraplay.
This one-hour training provides a concise introduction to Child-Centered Play Therapy (CCPT).
This training offers an overview of psychodynamic influences in play therapy, with a focus on Gestalt, Jungian, and Object Relations approaches.
The training will cover strategies for engaging caregivers, collaborating with other systems, and using play-based interventions that reflect the child’s lived context.
This training provides an introduction to directive play therapy approaches, focusing on Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) play therapy and Adlerian play therapy.
VIRTUAL TRAINING INFORMATION
- If you register for this training, make sure you have a good WIFI connection.
- Your computer will need a camera for you to be visible throughout the entire training to receive the certificate.
- We will be using Zoom for the training, and we will send you a link at least 24 hours before the start of the training.
- You will need to download the Zoom program to be able to use the link.
Nik Johnson
LPC-S, Registered Play Therapist™- Supervisor, EMDR Consultant
Nik has been a private practice counselor in Texas since 2017. He works with children aged (4+), adolescents, and adults, specializing in complex trauma, dissociative disorders, and play therapy. Previously Nik worked at an agency in Missouri providing play therapy to children in the foster care system. He offers continuing education to professionals especially within the topics of working with developmental trauma, dissociative disorders, and play therapy.

Allocation of Training Hours
Per the RPT Standards set by the Association of Play Therapy:
Participants are responsible for determining how each training aligns with their required primary areas.

Per APT guidelines, all Live/Virtual trainings are limited to 50 total participants. The number of participants both in-person and virtual combined cannot exceed this amount.
