Training Description

This play therapy training is offered Live In-Person for contact hours and LIVE Webinar via Zoom for LIVE WEBINAR/non-contact hours.

Play therapists need help navigating from the first contact with a parent looking for child therapy to the witness chair in a family court situation. Each twist and turn of the journey, Christy will put on her captain's hat and share information from national sources on how to ethically set up the intake process, respond to attorney questions, maintain their role, and protect themselves from liability. During this course, play therapists will learn where the waters are dangerous and how to find the calm in the storm. Throughout, the play therapist will learn to evaluate policies and procedures from their own theoretical lens.

Learning Objectives

  1. Each participant will be able to define these terms:
    1. Community play therapist,
    2. Court-involved play therapist

  2. Each participant will be able to explain specific boundaries for play therapists needed with court involved families.
  3. Each participant will be able to update their intake procedures to match their play therapy theoretical model and manage liability in a court involved situation.
  4. Participants will learn a step by step process to respond to a subpoena professionally as a play therapist.
  5. Participants will learn how to communicate clearly and ethically with attorneys about child clients with specifics on standouts for play therapists.

Christy Graham

Christy Graham began working in play therapy in 2000 at the Mental Health Mental Retardation Center of Burke County in Texas. Serving at risk families and child, she learned how to address mental health issues with a treatment team approach. She further developed her skills in play therapy and counseling while serving at the Nelson Center, a residential treatment center for CPS children. When she began her private practice in 2003 and then created her own company i 2013, she brought that depth of knowledge to her private practice focused on children and families. Now, her work with children, families and survivors of sex trafficking, has led her into more and more court involved treatment. She has learned to make a difference in complicated, difficult to treat families and wants to share these skills with you.
