Training Description


This play therapy training is offered Live In-Person for contact hours and Virtual Webinar via Zoom for non-contact hours.



This training is for participants who are curious to know what EMDR and Somatic Experiencing (SE) look like when applied to play therapy. Wondering what similarities are with these models when compared to traditional play therapy models? Participants will be able to explain and identify similarities and differences in the perspective of how complex trauma develops and impacts the brain, memory, and behaviors in play therapy. An overview of what EMDR and SE look like in play therapy will be included along with play therapy interventions incorporating these modalities.

1. Compare 3 similarities when using EMDR or Somatic Experiencing™ with traditional play therapy models
2. Explain what causes complex trauma from an EMDR or Somatic Experiencing™ play therapy lens
3. Describe how EMDR and Somatic Experiencing in play therapy are used with memories

Dr. Rhonda Johnson

Dr. Rhonda Johnson is and LPC-S, LMFT-S, Registered Play Therapist-Supervisor™, ACS, who has been working with children, adolescents, adults, couples, and families in private practice since 1999. She became a TBRI Practitioner in 2011 for her specialty of working with children who have been adopted domestically or internationally, children in state foster care, and children who have experienced trauma. Dr. Johnson is also an EMDR Consultant and a Somatic Experiencing™️ Practitioner. She incorporates knowledge from each of these theories and perspectives into her work. She is the founder and owner of the Center for Counseling and Family Relationships, a large, thriving group practice that was established in 2007 and specializes in family systems and trauma-informed approaches. Dr. Johnson is also the founder and owner of CCFAM Training, established in 2012, and Play Therapy Training Resources, established in 2021. Through those companies, she provides continuing education, supervision, and consultations. She is also a teaching fellow for B.H. Carroll Seminary.
